People from every walk of life can get into trouble with substances or alcohol. Determining
whether a problem exists, and outlining a course of action to address a problem is the
essential goal of a specialized evaluation. Sorting through the history and the facts of your
situation can identify what would help.
You might ask yourself:
- Do I find myself increasingly annoyed by family and friends talking to me about my
substance or alcohol use?
- Have I tried to quit or cut down on my own – but find myself struggling or
unsuccessful?
- Have I been feeling guilty about my drinking or drug use?
- Am I already in the legal system – and my probation officer has asked me to
complete a substance use evaluation?
I am able to offer you a consultation about these, and other, warning signs about
substance use – and help you sort out the size of the problem [if one exists], and what you
might do about it. We will explore the behaviors, emotions, and interpersonal reactions that
are often associated with substance use problems. After a thorough dialogue and
interview, an individualized plan will be developed for you – one that fits your personal
needs.
A specialized, written screening protocol is used when further substance use history is
needed. We review a number of elements comprehensively – your social and family
history, personal educational and work history, along with any legal problems that may be
part of your situation. All of this information is brought together to identify whether a
problem with substance use exists, the magnitude of risk for future problems or
dependency. I will review everything with you, so that you have clarity about how I am
reaching my conclusions.
This interview process typically benefits from us taking about 90 minutes of time together.
That amount of time allows me to get to know your personal story – and how life events fit
together over time. Pulling all of this information together benefits you – you will end up
with a comprehensive plan of action to address your personal issues, and to get treatment
for a substance us problem – if treatment would benefit you.
