Searching the word ‘HYPNOSIS’ on the Web will inundate you with fantastic claims about results

prepared by Terry Moore, MSW

Most hypnosis sites make big promises for hypnosis. Instant results. Effortless change. An adventure for the mind!

As a result, there is considerable misinformation about hypnosis. A great place to start for authoritative information is at the ASCH website. Here’s a website put together by a professor at University College London, Dr. Matthew Whalley.

After you read authoritative information, you’ll know:

  • Hypnosis is not a treatment itself, but a tool of treatment for medicine, dentistry, and mental health treatment.
  • Hypnosis does not cause a loss of control.
  • Stage hypnosis does not represent clinical hypnosis.
  • A health care provider using hypnosis does not impose hypnosis – it is a facilitation of the personal attributes and skills of the client or patient. A process of teaching, learning, and acquisition of skills.
  • Hypnosis is not sleep. It is not a state of unconsciousness. You will hear what is being said to you during your hypnosis session, and will likely have a distinct memory of the experience after the session is over.
  • You will establish the goals for your treatment with your health care provider. It is a collaborative experience.
  • The number of sessions you will participate in is dependent on your situation, your goals, and your response to treatment.

Hypnosis is well known as a help for smoking cessation. Weight management strategies often employ hypnosis. But that is just the beginning.

You’ll find that an experienced clinician can use hypnosis to facilitate or accelerate the progress you make for:

  • habit control
  • pain management
  • psychotherapy
  • personal growth

There is so much to sort through when it comes to understanding what hypnosis is all about, what it can be applied to, and what type of participation and results you can anticipate. Please call us at the office: 402-334-1122 – or use the contact page to submit a question.

If you are thinking about stopping tobacco use – here’s a great resource to check out:

Please, take this quiz from WebMD – it will help you assess your readiness to stop smoking and will offer you tips and resources if you are not quite there yet.
